A wise Chinese sage once said,
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
Wise words? But what do they mean to someone who is trying to achieve their goals in life? That’s what we’ll be talking about in this article.
I am sure that you have some big goals in your life. Perhaps you want a mansion in the countryside, a sports car, or your own boat.
I am also sure that you may well be looking at this goal and thinking “How the hell am I going to get that?”
And this is where our wise philosopher comes into play.
Pick one of your major goals that you don’t know how to achieve and examine it more closely. Think about the goal and you will realise that it is made up of a number of smaller goals, each of which is in turn made up of other smaller goals.
Grab a piece of paper, write down a major goal at the top, and below it, write down the steps you can take to achieve this goal. In effect, each of these steps represents a mini-goal, and each of these mini-goals can be broken down further if necessary into more manageable chunks.
Do not become obsessed with achieving each minor step on your way to the major goal. You may find that some steps can be skipped, some become unnecessary, and that new steps appear. Review these minor steps regularly as they will change often.
Now you’ve just done this quick exercise, and you should never leave the scene of a decision without taking some action, so go do something to get yourself on the path to your goal!
An example may be that you want to buy a farm in the country. You know nothing about farms. You may break your goal down into something like:
1) Find out about farming – is it for me and what does it involve?
2) What sort of farms are there and which type do I want?
3) What is the best area for the type of farm that I want?
4) How much money do I need to buy the farm
…
…
…
Buy the farm
This is a very simple illustration of breaking down your goals. Each one of these may be broken down further into actions you can take.
Now you realise, that the journey towards a goal starts with a single step, and is made up of many steps.

How do you begin to build up self improvement goals that will direct you to freedom, a bigger feeling of felicity, aid you accomplish a better life-style and at last produce a lot of success in your life? This question is not simple to answer as success implies dissimilar things to another people. Hence, whenever you would like to become successful you essential first have a clear agreement of what success means to you!
A wonderful technique to get a clear on what success means for you is to ask yourself the question, “what would I do whenever I knew I could not fail?” Allow yourself to enjoy in the mental image that is developed. The imagination that is made in your mind will present you what you actually desire in life and from this visual sense you are able to see what success means to you.
From the second a human is born he/she has a natural power to acknowledge what it is they desire and a belief that they could have it. We grow ambitions and dreams at a very early age. Even so as we turn older we are in condition to think that these dreams are not possible or are simple fantasies of our imagination. You are steered to get a good training so that you are able to find a good job that will allow you to get a mortgage, get married, have children and live a ‘normal’ life.
Along the time almost people accomplish their mid twenties they have all but given up on their dreams or even buried what those dreams are. They’ve convert conditioned into trusting that they’re incompetent of reaching what they desire in life. This primal belief forms the foundation of their self image and the rest of their mental attitudes are build on it!
The Role of Personal Development
It is the purpose of personal development and self improvement to take out these conditioned mental attitudes from your inner mind and release you to pursue the life flow that you preferred for yourself. By the use of personal development and self improvement you are able to begin today to take away mental conditioning that you accepted from well-meaning family, peers and teachers
Additionally you will also be guided to take away all those negative mental attitudes that have been given to you along not so well-meaning people and those you’ve developed yourself through negative life experiences. While this isn’t all of the time an easy or enjoyable journey to take the advantages that you’ll get from acquiring it are immeasurable and make it really worthy.
The freedom that you can feel from taking away just one negative mental and negative emotional pattern is akin to the feeling of rest and tranquillity you feel after extreme workout. There are at your disposal a lot of personal development and self improvement techniques that are designed to assist you reach this goal. Now these instruments and techniques are not designed to show you the way to become financially free but alternatively are designed to free you from your own inner resistance to being financially free. A lot of people think this is a waste of time and would rather to be given bit by bit instructions to build financial wealth and I was once among them. However, it did not matter how much effort I used or how many ‘guaranteed’ methods I followed my financial situations didn’t improve and many times actually grew worse.
Why was this? Were the projects I was following just not good enough to make wealth? Were the people peddling these rags to wealth formulas just conning me out of my money? Was gaining riches barely pure fortune like winning the lottery?
The answer to whole of the above questions is no!
The plans I followed had worked for thousands and made them wealthy! The people selling me the products and formulas had entirely made their fortunes using the very same formulas they were trying to teach me! It was only after a great deal of hardship and a lot of learning lessons that I discovered the reality – acquiring wealth has nothing to do with being lucky!
It was not that these matters weren’t good enough to produce the wealth I craved it was that I THOUGHT I wasn’t good enough. When you hold a negative self image and have a negative view of yourself and your abilities it’s very difficuly to reach success no matter how much attempt you put into it! This is why it is of paramount importance to first take away the negative conditioning that is holding you back in life.
Your mental attitude, which is only compiled of thoughts and feelings, is responsible for your actions. Thought is the creator of action! All action you perform, no matter how small or big, first begins in your mind as a thought. For each one thought begins as a feeling.
Think of when you met your last partner. You first felt the attraction. This grew into a thought or series of thoughts about meeting the person. Then you performed some action to make that happen. Bring to mind a time when you meet with your friends to have a social gathering. You had the feeling that you’d like to have any fun, or be with your friends, were feeling alone etc. And then you had the thought. Then you performed the action.
Whenever your actions are moved by your thoughts and feelings and your attitude is compiled of thoughts and feelings do you believe you could succeed at a given task whenever you hold a negative mental attitude about it or your ability to succeed at it?
At one time you embrace personal development and begin to apply any of the myriad of self improvement instruments to take away your negative mental attitudes you’ll naturally find yourself becoming more successful in life. You actions will be more positive and you will unconsciously perform the correct actions that will lead you to success. I am sure you can know see how important it is to set some personal development goals. Not only will you see improvement in your self, you will also see many symptoms of success added unto you!

How to set goals? First of all, don’t confuse wishes or desires with goals. Often, people want things, situations or accomplishments, and call these goals. Then they’re disappointed when they don’t get them. Just naming your desires isn’t effective goal setting. Good goals have some or all of the following:
1. Good goals are specific. A goal like, “I want to be healthy” is too general. “I want to lose weight and walk three times a week,” is better.
2. They’re realistic. Unfortunately, even if it is possible that you could become an astronaut, if you’re already 55, you better try to become a pilot for now. Unrealistic goals set you up for failure.
3. They’re written down. Writing down your goals is a way to make them more real, and this influences your subconscious mind, especially if you review the goals regularly.
4. They’re measurable. Exactly how many pounds do you want to lose? How much money do you want to make? How will you know if your relationship is better?
5. They’re motivating. Setting a goal for the right reasons is a good start. Good goals get you excited when you think about the benefits of accomplishing them. You should also learn how to re-motivate yourself, and reward yourself when you make progress.
6. Good goals become plans. Taking a goal and making it into specific steps makes it much more likely to be achieved. It’s easier to take one step at a time.
7. They have specific deadlines. By what date will you have a new job? Setting target dates really helps you measure progress, and motivate yourself.
8. Good goals consider personal factors. Will you succeed if you feel like you don’t deserve it? Possibly, but unlikely. You have to learn how to set goals for your personal development as part of any other major goals.
9. They’re followed by action. A secret of motivation and to getting where you want to be is to start with any movement towards the goal. Action begets action. Start slow if you must, but start.
10. They’re not written in stone. All major goals naturally evolve. Why would you become a family doctor once you learned that you liked doing lab work better?
That last one is a tough one. A change of course and an excuse are not the same thing, but to know the difference requires a certain level of self-awareness. Develop that, and you’ll be more likely to get to where you want to be. Especially if you use all ten of these keys to how to set goals.

Are you tired of the same old existence? Do you want more out of life than what life seems to be handing you? You can rise above mediocrity but you must first change your mindset.
To begin, you must have a keen desire for change in your life. You must know what you want, even if you don’t yet know how to get it. Be definitive in your desire. If you only had a short time to live, what would you really want to see, experience and do? Manifest clearly in your mind what you want or need.
Concentrate your energy and thoughts about your desire on the here and now, and not on the past or future. Embrace the present and let tomorrow take care of itself.
Be patient and let go of any anxiety, disbelief and doubt. Expect and believe that you have your desire already.
Get charged up emotionally about your desire. Don’t just visualize it; feel it. The more you’re enthused, excited and charged up about your desire, the faster you’ll have it.
Daily, affirm to yourself what you want. An “affirmation” is “a solemn and formal declaration.” Believe that you will get what you affirm you want.
Clear your mind of any and all negative thoughts. Negativity leads to mediocrity. Stay focused in a positive way at all times on your desire.
Believe in yourself. A belief is a thought, which is a kind of energy. Your beliefs have a great influence on you (and others around you) and can work for or against you. Recognize and get rid of limiting beliefs that don’t serve you. Retain those beliefs that bring contentment and quality to your life.
Stay focused on your desire. The more you visualize, feel, believe and affirm your desire, the more real it will become. The more you focus on what you want, the more your thoughts will help produce that desire at some point in the future.
Clearly set your intentions. An “intention” is “an anticipated outcome that guides your planned actions.” A realized goal or desire is the result of your intentions.
As attributed to Lisa Diane, a well-know inspirational leader, to get that which you desire, you must have it (in your mind), think it (your thoughts form your perceptions which form your reality), speak it (speak only positive thoughts about it), and act on it.
If you intently follow the above, you will attract those people, things, and circumstances that will bring about your desire. You will be a better person for it, and you will have what you want.

If you have some resolutions for the New Year or if you set some goals for yourself or your business for the next year, here are some ways to keep yourself on track and focused.
1. Less is more. Have 3 or 4 resolutions at the most. Any more than this will make them hard to focus on. If the resolutions you have can be achieved in less than a year, create others once you have accomplished these.
2. Visualize success. Know what accomplishing your resolution(s) will do for you. Day dream about it. How does it look and feel? Reaching your dream only happens if you are motivated enough to stick with it. If you don’t keep thinking about how much you want it and how good you will feel once you either accomplish it or make it a habit (or get rid of a habit!), you will lose interest.
3. Write them down. Here is another way to stay focused on your resolutions. There is something more permanent about the written page than just having it in your head. Sometimes just the act of writing it down is enough to keep you on track and focused.
4. Tell someone. Have a friend, a mentor, or a coach hold you accountable. Once you tell someone else it is just downright embarrassing to admit you didn’t stick with it. Sometimes we know that is the only way we’ll get it done. Some people are motivated completely by the positive aspect of getting it done and others need the fear of the consequences of not accomplishing it. Both can help you.
5. Post them. Put a copy of your resolution(s) where you see it/them frequently. Just seeing the list will continually remind you of what you are trying to do. Where can you put the list so you see it continually? How about the bathroom mirror or the refrigerator door?!
6. Read them. Say them out loud at least once a day. Make a little ritual of this. Do it at the same time every day. This would be a good time to visualize your success too (2). The more you think about your resolutions the more in focus they become.
7. Take action. Ask yourself at the beginning of the day what one action can you take today to keep you making progress on your resolution(s)? Moving forward one step at a time is what you are after.
8. Hire an expert. An expert can help you to overcome blocks, improve the way you are approaching the tasks or just boost your spirits. Depending on your resolution an expert might be a coach, a personal trainer, a nutritionist, or an organizer.
9. Use affirmations. Create a positive statement that you can use when the voice in your head tells you that you are not going to achieve whatever you are striving for. When you become aware that the voice is telling you can’t do it, substitute your affirmation.
10. Reward yourself. Give yourself something special when you cross a milestone or survive a particularly difficult period in your journey to achieving your resolution. Celebrate successes along the way and feel good about what you have done.
